Meeting your Expectations
Our pets hold a special place in our hearts, and as responsible pet owners, we want nothing but the best for them. One crucial aspect of ensuring their well-being is finding a veterinarian that understands their unique needs and potential health issues that all pets face. However, with numerous veterinary clinics and professionals available, it can be overwhelming to make the right choice. To make this process easier I have outlined some helpful hints to assist you in navigating the selection process.
Comprehensive Medical Expertise
While this seems like a no-brainer, it is very important to understand that the education of veterinarians varies from Veterinary College to Veterinary College. Of course, we would expect our veterinarian to possess extensive medical knowledge and expertise. At a minimum they should have a solid educational background, including a degree from an accredited veterinary school and a license to practice. However, not all veterinary schools are created equal. Clinical rotations where students take specific educational courses focusing on certain aspects of veterinary medicine involving the oversight of qualified and experienced instructing veterinarians while studying veterinary medicine are not consistent across all veterinary colleges. An example of this is the teaching of dental procedures in veterinary school. Dental is a major factor in the health of your pet, yet only a handful of veterinary colleges focus on teaching general dental care, dental extractions, and the equipment needed to perform these procedures. So, many veterinarians start their careers deficient in the understanding of these procedures. Most will, and most do seek additional training via veterinary conferences and wet labs. While it is true that many veterinarians learn “on the job” working closely with an experienced veterinary associate, it can take many cases to acquire the knowledge, skill and confidence to become proficient in these procedures. Look for a professional who keeps up with the latest advancements in veterinary medicine, regularly attends veterinary conferences and actively pursues continuing education to hone and sharpen their skills. It is not inappropriate for you to ask about these issues, much in the same way that you screen your own healthcare providers you should do the same with your veterinarian.
Do they take a compassionate and caring approach to pet care?
A vital aspect of a veterinarian’s role is their ability to connect with both the animals and their owners. But here’s the tummy rub, veterinarians are stretched, overworked, and understaffed in many cases. The ugly truth is there are not enough veterinarians, veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants to serve all the animals. The animal health community is trying to mitigate the issue with several new veterinary colleges being established recently, but even with that we are 4-6 years from having these veterinarians graduate and enter the workforce. To offset the growing need, particularly for emergency care, you are seeing veterinarians establish Urgent Care centers to fill the need for these vital services. Bottom line-Veterinarians are dealing with a lot of stress in today’s animal health environment.
Taking all of this into consideration, you should still seek a veterinarian who demonstrates genuine compassion, empathy, and patience toward pets. They should take the time to understand your pet’s unique personality, observe their behavior, and create a comfortable and stress-free environment during examinations and treatments.
Effective Communication Skills
It is essential that there is open and clear communication between yourself and your veterinarian. A great veterinarian will listen attentively to your concerns, explain diagnoses and treatment options in a way that you understand. If you have questions, ask. You are your pet’s voice, if you see something at home, write it down, if the veterinarian requests that you bring in a stool sample, bring the stool sample. Your pet’s care is as much your responsibility as it is your expectation that the veterinarian can address the current issue that your pet is facing. Your veterinarian should keep you informed throughout the entire process, from routine check-ups to complex procedures, ensuring you are an active participant in your pet’s healthcare.
Range of Services
While general veterinary care is essential, it is beneficial to find a veterinarian who offers a wide range of services. This includes preventative care, vaccinations, dental care, nutritional guidance, diagnostic services, surgical procedures, emergency care, and even alternative therapies like acupuncture, laser treatments, and rehabilitation services. Having access to comprehensive care under one roof simplifies the process and ensures a seamless continuity of your pet’s medical needs. Finding a clinic that is a one stop shop, however, may not address all the needs of your pet. Look for clinics that have board-certified specialists on staff in a wide range of specialties.
State of the Art Facilities
A veterinarian that has access to modern and well-equipped facilities that can provide accurate diagnoses and effective treatments will provide a higher standard of care for your pet. Advanced diagnostic equipment, in-house laboratories, modern dental units, and sterile surgical suites are indicators of a clinic’s commitment to quality care. Additionally, look for an inviting, odorless and clean environment, this is an indicator of the concern that the staff has for providing a positive experience for you and your pet. You may also ask if the facility is AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accredited, they are an organization that requires veterinary clinics and hospitals to meet a higher standard of care in their operations as an animal healthcare provider. Lastly, ask for a tour, many clinics and hospitals are willing to provide you with a look at the clinic, and if provided attend open houses.
Strong Recommendations and Reviews
Whereas I am not a big fan of word-of-mouth recommendations, it still can be a starting point in getting to know which veterinarians are doing business in your local area. I’d personally rely on a more thorough approach in interviewing several veterinarians that your friends, family, and neighbors mention when asked who they turn to for pet care. Review neighborhood online resources and look for reviews that others have had at these clinics to gain insight into the veterinarian that you may be considering. Look at your states veterinary licensing board to see if there are any open complaints about veterinarians in your area. Compile a list of questions that you’d like to ask the veterinarian, make sure to ask him about his experience with your dog or cats breed, if you have a small exotic like a guinea pig, sugar glider, or reptile ask about their experience with those animals too. Don’t be reluctant, ask your questions then assess whether the vet is right for you and your pet.
Emergency Care Availability
Emergencies can occur at any time, and having access to prompt and reliable emergency care is crucial. Inquire whether the veterinarian or clinic has provisions for after hour emergencies or if they can refer you to a trusted emergency facility. In most urban and suburban communities there are several Emergency Centers usually available. You should expect that this care will be costly, so I recommend that you carry Pet Insurance to help you cover emergent care.
Finally, when searching for a veterinarian, pet owners should set expectations that encompass comprehensive medical expertise, compassionate care, effective communication, a wide range of services, state-of-the-art facilities, positive recommendations, and access to emergency care. By carefully considering these factors and conducting thorough research, you can find a veterinarian who will provide exceptional care for your beloved pet, ensuring their health and well-being for years to come. Remember, a strong partnership between you, your pet, and your veterinarian is the foundation for a long and happy tail-wagging, leg-hugging, and playfully loving life together.
